If you need tpb for some hot keys, you need NVRAM polling.  Thinkpad-acpi
0.17 should detect it automatically (if you compile in NVRAM polling
support) on a X31.

You can send me (by private mail) the output of acpidump and dmidecode
(please edit out the UUID and serial numbers on dmidecode output) if you
want me to check your DSDT for compatibility and capabilities.

Fn+F8 and Fn+F11 are not reachable thorugh nvram polling usually (well,
fn+f8 is, but I didn't enable it *yet*, it is an one-line patch).

What is the hot key disposition on your X31? What symbols are above f1..f12?
Do they match http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/Default_meanings_of_special_keys ?
